SPH TRAINING

LEADERSHIP TRAINING

The first step in any healthcare facility’s path to long term SPH system success is training—not of the staff but of the SPH leaders and committee members.  Training of these vital individuals is an essential building block to SPH system success. The right training for the right people will ensure that your facility has the knowledge, skills and methods to effectively carry out key responsibilities and achieve sustainable success.

Ergo-PATH System has developed an outstanding 3-day SPH education course just for this purpose.  It is unique in that it focuses on the “whole” as well as the individual parts of the entire SPH system.  Our course teaches the key principles and concepts needed to build and maintain a solid and sustainable SPH system.  Our goal is to equip you with all of the knowledge and tools in order to avoid the pitfalls that SPH programs too frequently succumb.

This should be considered a required course if you’re facility is just starting down the path of SPH.  Failing to properly design your SPH system right from the start will result in a system that will quickly break down and lose momentum.  It is very difficult to regain staff and management buy-in after you have lost their enthusiasm and failed to meet their expectations.

Likewise it will prove to be invaluable for those who have implemented SPH and find that their program is “barely treading water” or worse.  For the individuals in charge of those “fragile” programs, the 3-day course will take you back to the beginning steps and will build on that in order to get it back on track.

The course tackles each phase of the SPH System:  Design, Implementation and Sustain.  Each phase has its own unique opportunities, challenges and potential pitfalls.  Different methods and options are detailed and discussed for each phase.

We offer this course in various cities throughout the year.  Another option is to have one of our consultants come to your facility, meet with your SPH leaders and customize the course to fit your needs and situation.  We offer this option as facilities who have several people to train have found this to be more time efficient and of greater cost savings for their organization.  The outline of the course can be seen here.  Course dates and locations can be seen here.

MANAGER/SUPERVISOR TRAINING

The second step in the training process is to educate and teach all managers and supervisors SPH.  Having a separate and focused training for managers/supervisors is often overlooked.  Don’t assume that managers/supervisors automatically know all about SPH and are completely engaged and in favor of SPH.  Managers/supervisors need to know what their roles and responsibilities are and how their involvement is key to the success and sustainability of the SPH system.  If managers/supervisors don’t “talk the SPH talk” and “walk the SPH walk” why should their staff do anything different?  Most facilities’ SPH policy focuses on staff training and responsibilities.  However, to train and achieve manager/supervisor “buy-in” can be detrimental to the SPH system.

The SPH Manager/supervisor training course is completely customized to each facility.  Ergo-PATH System does not offer this as a generalized course as we believe there are enough nuances and specific information that are unique to each clinic.  Please contact us for more information.

STAFF TRAINING

The third step and most obvious step to training is educating all direct patient care providers on SPH.  Usually the SPH equipment manufacturer or distributor provides staff training on how to use the SPH equipment.  Ergo-PATH System strongly believes that only training staff on how to use SPH equipment is neither sufficient nor effective.

There are two additional points that need to be included in order to have effective training.  1)  Staff must know why SPH is important to them and their patients.  They need to have the question, “What’s in it for me?” clearly answered.  Staff are not going to change from their usual patient care routine and old manual lifting habits if they aren’t completely convinced from the very beginning that SPH truly is important, beneficial and valuable to them and their patients.  2)They also have to be completely knowledgeable and confident in knowing when and when not to use SPH equipment, i.e. to be aware of what situations or circumstances should influence their decision to use SPH equipment.  This is required learning in order to prevent patient and caregiver harm and injury.  Don’t hamper and lower your chance of SPH system success by not including those two key points in your SPH training.

The SPH Staff training course is completely customized to each facility.  Ergo-PATH System does not offer this as a generalized course as each facility has its own culture, equipment and specific information that are unique to each clinic.  Please contact us for more information.

SPH PATIENT MAPPING TOOL

PATH VECTOR3—SPH PATIENT MAPPING TOOL

Do you find yourself frustrated that staff continue to manually move patients or use SPH equipment that isn’t appropriate for the patient or the situation?  Has your facility used algorithms or devised other patient and SPH equipment guidelines without any effect on staff behavior? If so, you’ve found the solution you’ve been looking for— the PATH VECTOR3.  The PATH VECTOR3 is a SPH patient mapping tool that is effective, functional and positively affects SPH culture change.

PATH VECTOR3 is designed to guide the caregiver to the correct SPH equipment choice.  It consists of three sections:  1) Patient assessment section, 2) Space/area surrounding the patient assessment section and 3) SPH equipment selection section.  This results in the caregiver choosing the correct SPH equipment every time.  It minimizes caregiver error and therefore, minimizes/prevents patient harm and injury.   It accelerates the results of the SPH system and is a vital component of sustaining a successful system.

SPH/ERGONOMIC DESIGN REVIEWS AND SITE PLANNING

The design and therefore, the function of patient care work areas have a considerable impact on the SPH system.  Poorly designed areas can contribute to lack of full utilization of SPH equipment and/or caregiver error.  Unfortunately, this is an area that is often overlooked or treated as a minor detail by those involved in SPH and/or facility engineers.  Ergo-PATH System’s board certified ergonomists are available to assist you in reviewing your facility’s current design or to review any new site planning or remodeling project design.  For all new projects, we highly recommend that someone who is knowledgeable in SPH and ergonomics/human factors be involved in all phases of design in order to make ensure SPH is functionally integrated throughout.  All recommendations are supported by ergonomic risk and productivity impact projections.  We focus on low cost, high-impact improvements to patient care work area design.
